If one was thinking that a drug to help fight depression and the like, such as prozac, is needed, can only one's local GP prescribe this or are there other options?

Does one have to go through a long pyscharitry type thing so the medical professional is sure that this is the right option, would one have to continue with such a programe?

Some suggest trying the herbal remedy of St Johns Wart - but don't use this if you are also on a prescribed anti-depressant

When I went to the doctors about my Anxiety attacks the doctor told me (within 4 mins of being there) that I was depressed (untrue) and that I should start taking anti-depressants. I refused butmost GP's hand them out like candy.
kazzee69 I disagree. In my experience of working with GPs, which is vast, a Dr will only prescribe medication when all other avenues have been explored. True, I've never worked in an inner city where one is lucky to find a GP at all only in rural practices but I still believe MOST GPs would not hand out antidepressants like smarties.

As for the original question, no. All manner of medication, including antidepressants can be purchased over the net but only by someone EXTREMELY FOOLISH. Many are highly addictive and dangerous if not monitored regularly ie. BP and blood tests etc. The ONLY SAFE way to obtain legitimate antidepressant medication of any kind is via a GP
By the way, if you are concerned someone will find out don't be. GPs, nurses, HCAs, receptionists, admin staff and even the cleaner are legally bound by terms of confidentiality
I was depressed after giving birth to my son 7 months ago, i was taken to the docs by my midwife and was prescribed anti depressants.  I was on them for 6 months and have now completed the course and feel great!  No uneasy questions or white coats involved! good luck!
