Morning, my mum is nearly 70yrs old, she has controlled high blood pressure, also high cholesterol 7.2, she has recently found 3 painful veins just under the skin in her stomach, 1 of them goes down the side of her navel, and the other 2 curve eitherside,if she touches them or leans against something they are very sore, you can also feel them, im thinking on the lines of furring arteries with her cholesterol being high, she also gets terrible pains in both legs either side of her shins, and pain in her groin, could any of those symptoms be related to one another or not, any help appreciated, she has been on statins, and has tried quite a few but always ends up with side effects and now the doctor has said she will have to try to control it herself with diet and Benecol and such like, which isnt helping. Any help appreciated. Thanks

Question Author
Do you know what it could possibly be?
Why don't you just get her seen by the GP?
Question Author
I would if it was that easy, she has a huge phobia of hospitals and she says if i go to the g.p they are only going to send me to the hospital and she wint go there, she is tring to self medicate at the moment by taking and aspirin every other day incase its furring up and the aspirin will thin the blood, ive told her she shouldn`t but she would rather do that than go to the doctor, is anyone thinking on the same lines of me, furring?
Question Author
Sorry about the mistakes, im trying to type to quick before i forget what i want to say. x
sorry, but i do believe she requires medical advice, would she at least go and see gp ?
Question Author
Not at the moment she wont, ive tried to get her there but she is a stubbon woman and wont go, she has an eye operation at hospital on Weds which she is worrying and stressing about at the moment, she has said once tht is all done and dusted she will consider going to the g.p.
Could you contact her GP practice and ask for a doctor or nurse to visit her at home?
I think you are right could be atherosclerosis.....

She really does have to see a doc as soon as poss......easier said than done with a phobia, but is so important xxx

Say to her to see her GP its probobly not going to cause any hospital admissions but the longer she leaves it to get worse she is doing damage! She will wind up in hospital seriously unwell.

But a phobia is a phobia and i feel for her....best of luck xx

Sounds similar to this Abdominal aortic aneurysm, but her veins in her tummy have not distended they have gone the opposite way and made like a valley, if you know what i mean.
ditto!

can i emphasise she needs urgent medical advice NOT the run around!

any/all changes with her health background and at her age need to be investigated urgently!
Question Author
Yes Cath i know she needs medical help, forgot to say her mum died of a massive stroke at the age of 63, ths was after many minor strokes, she is coming in later so im going to bite the bullet. Thank you everyone.
Yeah as if they have collapsed in?

Well imagine how little blood is getting through those areas?

Im not trying to be mean or scare you because there are treatments available but there are serious consequenses for delaying treatment or refusing treatment for this type of thing....i know you probs are at ur wits end! Mums eh?! Xxx
Ps let us know you you/your mum get on xx
Woman of 70 years of age with hypertension (no details of drug therapy) and a high cholesterol which seems to be under control with diet and Benecol.

I feel that the veins around her umbilicus are of no significance in this particular case.

You need to be more specific about the leg pains.....do they come on with exercise and relieved by rest?
I feel it's easy for some of us to tell others to go to the GP when we don't have the problem and most of us don't mind going to a GP either. I avoid the doctors whenever possible and prefer to stick my head in the sand even if I know that it's unwise so I sympathise tamirra. All you can do is try to persuade her, maybe offer to go too. Good luck.
Question Author
Sqad, she is on water tablets for high blood pressure, you say her cholesterol seems to be uner control, what at 7.2, is that not high?? The leg pains are mainly at night and seem to wear off once she gets out of bed.
