What word describes using a reason to do something to make it seem justified, to hide the real reason for doing it?

if you want to know a slightly uncommon word, your best bet is always to ask someone from Sweden!
Ha ha jno. On the other hand I've always thought 'ulterior motive' was spelled 'alterior' (as in 'alter ego'), so I've learned something new here. Which I'll immediately forget, of course, but that's another story.
i know you have your answer, but 'excuse' would have worked, rather than 'reason'.
