This is the Legend, but none other than the one in the Louvre Museum has ever been found.

Perhaps it was a story put around by a clever forger!?

There are two Virgins of the Rocks, so to speak, one in London, one in Paris; only one Mona Lisa.
Sounds like the plot of the Tom Baker-era Dr Who story City of Death to me!!
It was normal practice to at least work on various sketches before committing a painting to canvas, and an x-ray of the Mona Lisa in Paris shows that there is another version under that one. It's highly likely that Da Vinci painted other versions, but the one in the Louvre is the only one that seems to have survived.
