i have recently been given a oil painting by above artist. description is,a collie dog, 3 boys, 3 girls,one of the children is opening a gate ..on reverse of canvas is Higgins and Bowers of Tower Bridge Road London. the frame is very elaborate indeed. COULD anybody help to identify. thank you

I believe your painting is called Home Team by Arthur John Elsley (1860 - 1952). The theme is typical of his work that catered to the Victorian fondness for children and animals in playful settings.

He lived in London and had work exhibited at the Royal Academy.

There is a book about his work, Golden Hours, the work of Arthur J. Elsley 1860 - 1952 by Terry Parker published by Richard Dennis 1998.

I don't know anything about Higgins and Bower.

Benge - you should take this into a reputable dealer - or even the Antiques Road Show. Cutesey - wootsey oils of children and dogs are very saleable these days. It's all fashion - and so you are looking at at least four figures.

I too recently aquired an oil painting with the name higgins and bowers of tower bridge road london but mine is a seascape of extreme detail by I think jm whichel and would love to know if anyone can help with any information about either the artist or higgins and bowers.Thank you

I too have a painting here with Higgins and Bowers of Tower Bridge Road London and it is a James Webb Seascape dated 1872. All looks genuine. What date is your painting from?

I have the very same picture on oil,,the frame is roughly 20x16 gold in colourbut quite beautiful. On the back is

first line,,,,,Higgins and Bower

second,,,,,,Tower Bridge Road

third,,,,,,,,,,London

The back of the painting looks very old and it seems the frame is held together with wood inserts, it is canvas but its a fake and is still desireable,,but for only a few hundred dollars.
