I'm trying to find a book.

I read the book about 5 years ago, its about a boy and he goes to a boarding school and there is another boy there who is like a bully, or his enemy? anyway, he watches him sneak off all the time into the building and he finds out he smokes. Its like a wizard/witch story. He also goes on a mission in a dream? to find a needle in a haystack or something. Near to the end he's in a race and wins?
