Could be due to grubs in the lawn. I know blood meal works for some things I don't know if it will control the grubs. You could try it. Other than that a lawn care firm will be your answer.

Bare patches can be caused by many things, a common one is grass grub.

Sounds as though you have a lot of Daddy long legs that have hatched just beneath the grass surface . They feed on the grass roots totally destroying a once immaculate lawn.

Could be leatherjackets.
