My goldfish has been acting ill the last few days.

It's; either been floating near the top, laying on the bottom or acting as if it's stuck in the plants, laying there, as if it's dead for a few seconds then fluterring about a bit . . . . .

Oh no ... your goldfish is "dying" ?

Maybe it's Dyeing....changing colour

I only got B's in English, that's my excuse.
Maybe it's just kidding...........
Maybe it's "dieting" ?
These things happen. Flush it.
snags ... harsh, but ... err ... practical.
starve it for a few days and see if it gets any better
If you flush it, either alive or dead, i'll never forgive you!
Note to Molly:

"Don't tell B00 about the flushed fish - tell her you released it back into the wild."
Swim bladder problem ..you can treat it with some stuff that a decent petshop sells is irt a bog standard goldfish.( you will need to put it in a separate container to treat it) ..if so you might be able to rescue it...also give it the smallest frozen peas you can pick out...defrost them and feed them to the fish this sometimes works

If it is a fancy a veiltail type you will probably try and fail miserably.... stick with easy tropicals as mixed tropical/ goldfish family tanks are really hard to keep balanced

You might not have enough filtration as well...worth upgrading as this will help prevent problems in the future... always be one level above what you ought to have for the tank

Could be boo. I might try the pea thing. But, it didn't seem to want to eat and only nibbled on some left over bits that went to the bottom so I don't know if it will eat a pea.
It might choke on the pea.

Err ... can a goldfish choke? (given that they don't need air!)
Question Author
It's a fantail that's about 5cm.
Try the pea thing, then as danchip suggested, starve it for a couple of days.

If that fails, and it really doesnt look like its going to make it, euthanise it. But don't put it down the crapper!
Does it have other symptoms?

Google Dropsy and see if that fits in.

I'm going out in an hour and wo't be back until tomorrow afternoon, it might be gone by then . . . . .
When you say it's "acting ill" are you suggesting it's pretending? I'd fire up the bbq and put the bowl nearby.........that should perk it up a bit especially if it sees you making up an oil and vinegar dressing.
Incidently, if you've got left over food in the tank, you're over feeding it.
