Can anyone tell me what bird re-established itself as a breeding species in Great Britain in 1954?

Yes, it was the Osprey.

 They were persecuted practically to extinction, but miraculously the first breeding pair appeared in Scotland in 1954 - and now we've been fortunate enough on the south coast to see them occasionally during migration.
