When a mole burrows, where does it dispose of the loose soil, besides the bit that form the mounds --- the amount of loose soil is always more than when it is compacted, so how can the animal move back along its burrow --- or doesn't it?

I don't know for sure but I reckon that they push the earth upwards. If you think of a field with moles, you can see raised tracks, the burrows are very close to the surface.
well I know for sure that when earth is removed it takes up more space than when it was in its original place (having dug a basement!) So I reckon the mound is the earth dug out of the tunnel.. and you would have to work hard to compact it all back..

We laid turf a while back then got moles and when I lifted the turf you could see his tunnels all over the place!! Little ******!!!!
