I think it depends on what you want the cat to do and what's in it for the cat.

Tone of voice and hand gestures can give the cat the message as regards normal things like not jumping up on surfaces or coming after food.

I think cats are far too independant to be trained to do anything they don't want to do or if there is nothing in it for them.
cats train you!!!!!!!!!!!!
Cats will always do the opposite of what is wanted from them.

..and they laugh while they do it!!
My cat plays fetch with tinfoil! He has done ever since we got him, I never knew of a cat that did that before so we thought it was quite funny. Maybe he thinks he's a dog?
I don't know about actually training a cat, but they definitely can learn. My Frankie has epilepsy and needs a small tablet morning and evening. The first few times I had to physically sit him down, and then open his mouth. After about a week, I could say "sit Frankie, open your mouth Frankie", and he now responds to the spoken words with no problem at all. It is just as well, as he is only three and will be on this medication for the rest of his life.
