Hi Lesley

What fish are you talking about ? Most fish require more than one male per female. Goldfish can often have 6 or 7 males chasing a poor female.

The reason for this is they are trying to drive her into a weedy or shallow area where she will then release her eggs and the males will battle to fertilize them.....and try to spread his genes as much as possible.

Females can get absolutely exhausted by the constant attention of the males and may take time to recover.....spawning can last several days and can occur on five or six occasions throughout the spring and summer.

Hope this helps a bit

I think that the fish is about to give birth and they are waiting for dinner
