I Am A Bit Late In The Day

(remember that I am deaf and live alone)

This had been going on for 7-8 years but I genuinely didn't know.

However Mr Maxie was groomed last Monday and after I put him in the back of the car and I called up to see a friend. However on the hill to see that friend another friend was bringing her grandchildren into the house and spotted me.

Her husband brought the children in and she sat beside me in the front of the car and of course the two of us started giving the wag in the wall (ie conversation)

This friend adores dogs and in fact had just got her wee dog PTS the previous Friday (he was 14) - she started crying in my car and I understood fully then we went into the convo.

However she kept looking at my Maxie ie loving him and loving him but she said to me Jenny he is crying - well I definitely can't hear him crying any time but I guess he probably he does. After a convo and her saying oh God I gotta go - he is crying so sadly. That was that.

I know the above is long-winded but I put Maxie out a good lot throughout the back to do a pee and he does it but luckily enough I do have mats in the dining room which I can wash in the machine and lately I am having to do this nearly every day cos Maxie is peeing.

Now bless him it is at the back of the door where the urine stain is and now I am realising - he is probably crying (and I can't hear) to let him out and he is peeing on the mats.

Now for the real answer - whilst I can't hear him - is there anything I can do - when he is crying to get out - ie a deep bell or any answers would do. Thanks for any help.

The mats are eventually wearing away LOL

First thing our dog does when home from the groomers is head for his water bowl too, and has a big long drink, even though water is always available at the groomers.
Second thing is, he gets taken into the garden and does a wee.

i need to tell you that when he wants to do "boo boo" - he comes dancing into the living room (not a bark) and searches my face telling me he wants to his you know what but no dancing from the eyes when of the pee pee.
Our stupid Poppy will only drink from a glass. Never a bowl. She has her own glass, but also drinks mine if its available.
Years ago it used to be a sheet of newspaper in a plastic tray for little dogs to pee on .Much better than having to wash mats every day. Just a thought.
I don't think Poppy is the stupid one Lottie;-)
You are right LB! We're the stupid ones. She won't drink water unless it's fresh from the tap or if we are out, fresh from a thermos.
One of my dogs was a very fussy drinker, loved tea but not if I made it, wouldn’t drink from her water bowl if there was anything floating in it but she loved drinking dirty puddles.
As Minty suggested, would it be simpler to let the dog out more often?

He only pees every fews hours. When you put him he has a horror of Mr not letting him again
So go out with him till he gets the hang of it. He sounds like an anxious little dog, so try and relieve his anxiety.
Our dog is taken out into the garden with his lead attached to his collar when we want him to do a wee. He gets it, he does a wee. He doesn’t like going into the garden by himself unless we’re out there with him, and we never shut the back door on him.
You have to be persistent to train him to wee on command, no excuses, a bit of effort on your part will pay off.
Am i the only one who just leaves the back door slightly ajar so he can go out as often as he likes?

My garden is not just for wees and then back in again, he likes to have a sniff about or chase birds.

I only really get him in and shut the door if its really cold.
Like Darcy during the summer my door is left open for them to come and go.
My dogs don’t bark, I generally let them out every time I get up to make a coffee for ‘piddle time’ they were trained to go to those words, if they need out at other times they put their heads on our lap.
My cousin trained her dogs to ring a bell hanging from the back door.
Sam here - I only have cats but unless it’s freezing I have the back door open, purely for fresh air.

thanks again for the "more" answers - you know I do most of the things you mentioned but one thing I can't have - like putting him out all the time every hour etc cos believe me my house especially in this cold weather is like an oven most of the time and one is losing expensive heat.

I would like a deep "bell" of some sorts at the door and then start to train him (hopefully). but sure will I hear the bloody bell? LOL

I will contact the RNID
we have a dog flap
You can buy pressure mats that sound an alarm when stood on but I don't know if the weight of a dog would be enough to trigger it, or if it would be loud enough for you to hear it, JJ.
This is a cheap one

Another type

Another solution could be to set up a web cam that sends an alert to your phone if it detects motion.

Ha ha Barry - don't have a phone

Bednobs - that would be good - could you give a link please or where to find it. thanks
You can get a dog/cat flap door at most pet shops or on line. You would have to have someone cut the hole in your door. To train my cats I used to prop the flap open during the day.
jj I gave you a link to door flaps for Maxie on Page 1. xx
