This story has popped up quite a few times on my FB newsfeed over the past few days. Has it been discussed on AB - maybe I've missed it.

"When Notre Dame was burning, the world's media covered every moment of it and billionaires rushed to restore it. Right now, the Amazon is burning - the lungs of our planet - it has been burning for 3 weeks no. No media coverage. No Billionaires."

"The Amazon rainforest that provides 20% of the world's oxygen and home to 3 million species of plants and animals has been burning for three weeks without media coverage."

Why would the media not cover this story?

Spath did a thread earlier in the week, Maggiebee.

Thanks, will have a look for Spath's thread. Obviously missed it.
It was Thursday, 'Amazon Is Burning' - I don't do links, sorry!
it's an unfair comparison. when notre dame burned, it occurred in the centre of a major city, witnessed by the city's population and the media residing there. Amazonia is hundreds of miles from any comparable centre of population and it's taken several weeks for the scale of the problem to be appreciated. now it is, the situation in Amazonia is being widely reported.

and no billionaire or any amount of his money will have any effect on Amazonia while bolsonaro is president and his less-than-environmental policies hold sway. they only way anyone can make a difference is international pressure and in that respect, the EU is doing absolutely the right thing.
It is not just the Amazon rainforest which is burning.
This summer has seen enormous fires in northern Russia which will have a huge environmental impact.
Also there has been catastrophic melting of the Greenland ice cap and July was the hottest month ever recorded
Apart from on here I've seen this reported on BBCnews, mailonline and on radio news so it is being covered.
Not another nonsense comparison with Notre Dame, surely ?
If the media haven’t covered it, how do we know about it?
If it's a rainforest, the rain will put it out, won't it?
I will never buy anything from Amazon again.
I believe most of those billionaires have provided promises rather than actual money.
The UK are donating 10 million according to my news feed.
jno, //I believe most of those billionaires have provided promises rather than actual money. //

Why do you believe that?
The supermarkets are making dumpers available so you can donate bottles of water if you care to when shopping.
it was in the newspapers a while ago, naomi, months after the fire

https://www.france24.com/en/20190615-france-small-donor-rebuilding-notre-dame-cathedral-paris-fire-french-billionaire-charity-us

I can't find any more recent reports saying the situation has changed.
jno, Ah, I see. //"They want to know what exactly their money is being spent on and if they agree to it before they hand it over, and not just to pay employees' salaries."//

Can't blame them really. It's so easy to spend other people's money. I hope they now have the information they wanted.
why do I believe billionaires have pledged, rather than given ?
because they are billionaires
and they wouldnt have a lot of money if they gave it away
also this:
"The French billionaire Bernard Arnault promised on Tuesday to donate €200m (£170m), hours after his longstanding rival François Pinault, announced he was giving €100m.

The Bettencourt family, will contribute €200m, the energy group Total €100m, and the brothers Martin and Olivier Bouygues announced a personal donation of €10m, as did an American couple, Henry and Marie-Josée Kravis

complicated all this .....
Reporters on the news keep saying that the Amazon Rainforest is the lungs of the world. From what I've read and seen elsewhere, that isn't totally true, as it appears to contribute only 20% of the oxygen. Still a fair whack though innit?
