Small Deep Round Holes In Lawn

Whilst mowing the grass today, I noticed a reasonably large number of small deep holes in the lawn, some quite close together. I have never seen them before, so would appreciate any advise on what is causing them, and more importantly, how I can get rid of whatever it is that might be causing them. Many thanks in advance for any help.

I'd rather have the fox than get rid of the holes!

How small and how deep are these holes?
If the holes are pencil sized in width then they would probably be caused by tawny mining bees.

^^^ I think Tilly is correct in asking about size.

My suggestion and 237SJ's are both valid ones based upon what we know so far but an indication of size would definitely help to narrow it down a bit!
we have foxes and badgers that dig holes in the lawn x
could be badgers, usually about four to 6 inches, two or three deep, the edge of the holes shallow in angle.
Dothe holes look like this?

If yes . . . Woodpeckers!

(The ones we have here might be divebuddy's former tenants)

I would say the holes are 1.5" to 2" across, and at a guess, 7* to *8 down, but I feel there is a run going on, as the wholes are spaced about 6" but then more before another group of holes is visible. Im seriously wondering if it could be mice?
I'd bet on mice.
Without much to go on, I'm thinking voles, in which case I would leave them alone and enjoy the wildlife right on your doorstep.
Meerkats. They are getting everywhere these days.
Rats are a possibility .... we had some small holes of about the same size as yours and they turned out to be rat runs. Immediately stopped feeding the birds and got the council pest control round quickly!
Moles? they are a lot smaller than people imagine. The size is about right for a mole.
If it is moles then pushing the sticks of children's toy windmills into the ground is supposed to deter them. The spinning sails make a vibration that the stick transmits to the ground and it scares them off!
I'm not joking , a groundsman for a golf club told me this is how he gets rid of moles on the golf greens, they are protected and killing them is not allowed.
Has anyone in the family got a pogo stick or started putting/playing marbles?
Info on the size will help narrow it down
Somehow I missed the 18:15 post as I flicked through the answers
