red rash on dog

I have a 2 year old rescue staffie. She is adorable but has very red skin on her belly and ears . It comes and goes. I noticed that when she had been leaning on my husbands jacket in the car she had a red square on her face were she had been leaning and it styaed for around 2 days. Does anyone have any ideas? She has been wormed defleed etc. Itook her to the vets who gave me some shampoo but it seemed to make her redder.

Hi maclarencat-Yvonne's right, it does sound like allergy. What is your hubby's jacket made of? Do you have any other pets, eg. cats, whose hairs might me setting her off?

What does she eat? How often does she "go"? Does it look healthy (as much as poo can!)? She might have allergy to the flea treatment she's been given.

Try and get her back to the vets, who can perhaps start running some tests. My dog is gluten intolerant, and in the past couple of months he has been scratching and biting himself, so he's just finished a 6-week course of antibiotics and mange diagnosis treatment. Although he is better, he still scratches more than he usually would, so we are back on Monday, when the vet will probably suggest skin swabs, blood tests etc.

Is your dog insured?

Thanks. My husbands jacket is made of leather (strange) I cant imagine a dog being allergic to leather but it does sound like it. Unfortunately as we have only just got her she is not insured and obviouslet as it is an existing condition ( the vet supplied the shampoo) it would not be covered. She is not scratching though she does occasionally nibble but on the whole it doesnt seem to bother her. It just looks bad. I wondered about trying tea tree shampoo before another trip to the vet

Aw, maclarencat, I hope it's figured out soon: I know how hard it can be to eliminate all the possibilities! The vet who dealt with Jack when he was ill the first time insisted we put him straight onto Hill's Science Plan food (noooO!) and when I asked if there was a "halfway house" as such, she said, "Well it MIGHT be a gluten intolerance, but I very much doubt it." Pah, what did she know!

They can be allergic to anything, so you never know...Maybe she has an aversion to another animal's skin?!
Does she have a fairly regular routine? Or exposure to lots of different things? Jack's routine is fairly regular, so at least we can work on eliminating everyday factors.

Thanks leelapops. I thinkwe willjust have to try and eliminate things. I would start with leather but unfortunately our furniture is leather and I really dont want to forbid her fromcoming into the sitting room though I may have too. I am begining to think she has a couple of skin problems as she is definately worse if she is stressed or worried. We are trying to keep her in a routine as it seems if we change anything she feels very insecure and goes red. Mind you she is still the cutest thing you ever did see !!!

Why dont you take her to another vet for a second opinion. I know it will cost a little more but they are worth it. Our oscar had a red patch on his belly and it was really irritating him. One vet didnt know what it was so gave him antibiotics, another vet knew instantly that it was an irritation caused by something in the 'environment'??! like a bug bite. He gave us some cream and oscar was instantly relieved. He will finish the antibiotics, but the cream worked instantly.

In any case if the Shampoo your vet gave you hasnt helped you should stop using it and get her back to the vet anyway. Again, though, Id try another vet.
