i am terrified of the dentist, goes back to being a child of five and having one of those bloody gestapo black oxygen masks forced on my face, can still remember the feeling and the smell of the gas, had terrible nightmares and woke up vomitting. had to go back 2 weeks later and can remember my mum dragging me along the street on the pavement screaming. after that wouldnt go near a dentist and mum never attempted it again. finally persuaded to go again by a friend when i was about 14 and had to have 14 fillings! blame me mum, god bless her soul, she looked after her own teeth, went every 6 months and still had her own when she died. the moral of this long tale is i visit the dentist regularly, still hate and dread it, but my children go every 6 months and have beautiful teeth and are not afraid, although my youngest has to have braces fitted next month, nobodys fault, just nature, BUT SHES NOT FRIGHTENED and thats the main thing. god ive gone on a bit, soz!!!

I know what you mean about the "dreaded gas mask" makes my stomach churn remembering those days, the hygenist told me the people born in the 50s are the ones most afraid because of the treatment they received in the
"olden days" lol, i do go regularly cos i dont want false teeth............
I think what made me gag was the smell of the actual mask RUBBER! yuk it made me ill just to think about it.

It wasn't until I was a teenager that I learnt that the school dentist(s) were in fact dental failures in that profession, well lets say they had scraped past their exams!
And rather than turf them out, they were put to use for school children.....crazy when you think about it....the time when you should have the best treatment and dental care and they foisted you with these plebs!
That is now in the past, thank goodness and your regular qualified dentist sees children as well as adults.

It wasn't just the masks that were "gestapo" when those butchers got you in that chair!!

i am terrified of the dentist..i think i have a fear of pain. not anywhere else but my mouth though, odd! neways something that helped me was getting a new fit italian looking) dentist =D i'm still scared stiff but now when i go i shut my eyes n listen to his accent. failing actually having a fine dentist i suppose you could always ask him to wear a mask of someone hot and tell him it helps to relax you, therefore making his job easier!
