I adopted a 7 year old German Shepherd about 4 months ago where she used to live on a farm. Yesterday on a walk with my friend and his dog she randomly attacked another little terrier dog and killed it (according to my mate, not 100%) and its been on my mind ever since but worst case scenario what can happen? My mate said the dogs leg was hanging off despite me puttin my hands in my dogs jaw to seperate them and all i seen was deep teeth wounds with some blood. He also said the vet bill was £2000 which leads me to believe hes not telling the truth. My dog has never attacked a dog before and i dont know what made her tick. It also confuses me that my dog was completely fine around my mates dog.

Also, whilst trying to seperate the dogs, the terrier turnt around and bit my knee and i needed a new tetanus injection.

By law, where do i stand?

So, the owner spent £2K with the vet trying to save the other dog, but it died. I think you are saying this. That is a huge amount of money. What pet insurance do you have which might cover a claim from a third party.? Who ran off, the other dog's owner? If she knows where you live, you might get a visit from the police.
is the vet charging overtime for working on a bank holiday?
powell - i think you need to rewrite your account and retell it -
as you are being vague and making it hard to help -
people are getting exasperated and will give up, if you dont explain properly what happened -
it doesn't matter if its a bit long - people cannot correctly advise you with all the facts.
It all boils fown to the fact that ALL dogs should be on leads when taken into public places
MrsLulu //It all boils fown to the fact that ALL dogs should be on leads when taken into public places//

absolute nonsense!! so you are saying that the majority of dogs will never be able to run off lead because of a few very rare incidents like this, what nonsense you talk!!
Powell, I would suggest that if you can be identified you are in quite a lot of trouble, failure to control a dog in a public place, and the resulting death of another dog will not be taken lightly by the authorities.
Can you still please clarify - were you on the walk or not? If not who put their hands in the dog's mouth and who had their knee bitten and who took who to the vet?
And are you now 16? i'm surprised you personally were allowed to adopt a dog.
"I needed a new tetanus injection?"

Why was that then?

Lmao
If this is true, does your pet insurance cover it, if not pay it and muzzle your dog in future when she's out.
A dog that randomly attacks will do it again. It either needs firmer control in public (i.e a muzzle and at the very least a lead) or it needs putting down. I hope it manages to get the muzzle option.
I would think the average 16 yr old will have trouble paying a £2k bill

(One of powells earier posts says he was 13 in Jan 2010)
RATTER15, I dont thing it is nonsense at all. Have read of many incidents such as this and also of children being attacked. There was something on the news awhile ago about dogs having to be on leads.

flump all of you then. Trying to explain it more clearly is vague????

Thanks voulezvous btw everyone seems to be like "nasty dog" "should be put down" "it will attack again" i appreciate that little bit of hope
meow
I didn't see anyone say that, I certainly didn't. I said muzzle her in public in future to keep your own dog safe from the possible repercussions of another fight as well as safeguarding other people's dogs. Get over yourself.
Others gave hope too, Powell. Your dog has proved dangerous, so now it's up to you to keep it safe from itself. Muzzle and keep on a lead.
Flump all of you was uncalled for, nearly everyone has tried to be practical - you haven't even been able to tell us in words of one syllable if you were there.

NI Number?
I've heard that you can apply for one if you have not yet received one if your at least 15 years and 7 months, 15 years and 9 months or 16. Which one is it? (I'm 15 years and 8 months) Thanks :)...

So-are 16 yr olds allowed to adopt dogs?...and is 16 considered to be a responsible age when 'in control of a dog'?
Just wondering....
If your dog had no blood or traces of a fight on it when you came back ... assuming you were gone for a while, then I would suggest it may not have even been your dog that damaged or killed the other dog. And if you came back and the terrier bit you, were you not there to see it killed? In which case you should know exactly what happened! Either way, the dog that damaged or killed another dog should be taken for some serious training and muzzled when out and about. Also it should NEVER be left with children in or out of the house!! In addition, I doubt very much the vet bill is correct. Sounds a bit dodgy to me! Have you actually spoken to the vet and seen the bill?
