Last night I could see half the Moon over Bristol. My girlfriend is on her way to New Zeeland as we speak. When she arrives and looks up at the moon to ponder if she'll be able to cope for a month without me. What phase of the moon will she see? jim

It's the same phase wherever in the world you are -- she'll see it half a day later, which will look almost the same. The phase of the moon is to do with the relative positions of the earth, moon and sun. Moving to the other side of the world doesn't make much odds in compared with that -- and anyway, New Zealand at night is in much the same place as Bristol at night, as meanwhile the earth has turned around.
The old romantic in me would say 'blow a kiss at the moon' and tell your girlfriend to look at the moon that night and know it's the same one you blew a kiss at. Worked for me when I'm separated from loved ones somehow makes the world seem a smaller place. Sorry it's that not very astronomical ;)
Ahh bless! It will be the same phase, but it'll be the 'other half' that she sees - ie if we see the right half, she'll see the left etc. when I was in the southern hemisphere i spent ages pondering this!
