I posted an entry entitled High Time in the News section recently and have since then certainly not - unless by touching something inadvertently - chosen a 'Best Answer'. However, I now see that one such answer HAS been given that accolade. Since the chosen answer was the second one offered, how on earth would I or anyone else have chosen it as 'best'?
I am not trying to denigrate the answer, as such, but I was never aware that such choices were simply taken out of one's hands. My query, therefore, is: "Are they?"
DTC, I'm going to have to call it a day now, in any case, though I'll pop in again tomorrow. Meanwhile, I'll just say a big 'Thank you' to everyone who has answered. I just wish I could give you all a 'Best Answer' award, but - since I can't - NONE of you are getting one, so there!
Yes........some answers in Crosswords do need research.
I am talking about a particular contributor to Crosswords who ROUTINELY gives BA to the first answer (whether right or wrong answer) after usually about 2mins maximum........not a lot of research.
I have suggested that a diplomatic suggestion by the Mod on duty at the time may solve this problem.
My second point is the congratulatory thread by another well known MOD on someone reaching 1,000 BA.s and the one that is congratulated is invariably a Crossword contributor gaining BA from the "turkey shoot" of the Aber in the above paragraph.......p1sses me off, for the reasons I have already given.
DTC, I just posted an answer for you, but it seems to have floated off into the ether. I suggested that I would love to give each and every one of you a Best Answer award but - since I couldn't - I would give one to none of you. So there!
I don't think mods are "on duty", they're just ABers who are around at the time, and I don't think they're able to have a quiet word with anyone. At least none has had a quiet word with me. As far as I know their job is just to drop trolls through a trapdoor.
Yes, Baldric, I saw it, as I've said. Thing is, though, that at the time 80 was the highest numbered answer listed and the 17.39 one was No 81. Clearly, it drifted away for only a moment or two.
Crosswords is one of the few areas I'm active. I came here to get an answer and I've stayed since.
Sqad, I think you need a lie down or a hobby. What possible harm is it causing anybody?
//... At least none has had a quiet word with me... //
jno , that's because youv'e been the epitome of tact ,diplomacy and good behaviour at all times on this site ( by the way ,that'll cost you £ 20 , not the £ 5 , we agreed ):-)
Ahh I see sqad - apologies. I was reading too much into your post at 16.16
"Yahoo Answers have a BEST ANSWER system but Crosswords are excluded.
To me this is a better system and values the work that goes into...Best Answers"
So you have difficulties with just the one poster then. But as he has posted about 1300 questions in the last 18 months, it can't have skewed the figures all that much. And crosswords and Q&P are very much the bread and butter of this site.
I will just have to accept without really understanding that this worries you a lot more than me.
I fail to appreciate the purpose of 'Best Answers' whilst arrangements are defunct for the allocation of Badges.
However, what I have found interesting in this thread was at 17.02Hrs the Editor said..." You probably hit the button by accident - or, alternatively, one of the editors did :)" ......That suggests there is more than just one Editor.
