HELP - Immobiliser on Rover 216 won't work - key won't open the door - only manually and won't turn the engine over?

I have a Rover 216 R reg. I had to be towed back yesterday as the immobilser won't work. The key won't open the door using the key fob and it won't turn the engine over! Do I have to buy a new key...
