Where does the word Cops come from?

Someone asked me this question tonight. I said it was from the copper buttons the British policemen wear (or wore). Did I make this up, or is there some degree of truth in my statement?

I know the meaning of the phrase, where does it come from? Anything to do with high stepping horses? Or is it from smartly stepping soldiers? Or is it something else?
