Does anyone know how to report an illegal job advert? A local well known Fish And Chip Shop has a very large notice in their window saying "Waitress Required" that is illegal. As a man I find that offensive and it should be illegal

Even if you agree with Mr Dickens in that the law is often a type of equine, hc4361 and gordie both have a valid point. If, in the UK, that ad is breaking an employment law then it is illegal.

I suppose you could try here http://www.equalityhumanrights.com/about-us/devolved-authorities/the-commission-in-scotland/equality-advisory-support-service-contact-details but it would be fairer to point out the error to the shop concerned before wading in. Personally, unless I was going to go after the job (if I was a man) I wouldn`t bother.

Where does gordie say he wants to apply for the job? All he says is that he finds it offensive. If he is applying for it, he's a shoe-in as he's obviously got his knickers in a twist.

I imagine that it is clumsy wording rather than any sort of overt discrimination.

A quiet word to the manager/owner may be the first and best response.

i also just think it's clumsy wording. I talk about my "milkman" even though she's a lady. On the webpge she introduces herself as "hello, im your local milkman, tanya"

I'm open to correction on this, but I'm not sure the ad is illegal. Hiring somebody on a discriminatory basis is, but advertising may be merely clumsily worded. If you applied for the waitress job as worded and got it, then I don't know that any offence would have been committed.

Gordie - did you go back to the shop? Or did you report them? Or did you just forget about it?

I have applied for two jobs where the reason given for me not getting them was that I was female. Both many years ago but I remember being angry about it. But now the law is there that should prevent such things happening.
