Obviously I'm well aware Doc Martin is fictional, but....in last night's episode he demanded that the stray dog who irritated him be put down, and was even on the verge of delivering the lethal injection himself before being interrupted. What kind of message does this send out? Martin Clunes is supposedly a dog-lover, fronting programmes about dogs and other animals. He is THE star of that show an a huge star for ITV, plus his wife is a producer of Doc Martin, so surely he could have objected to such a storyline. I'm deeply disappointed in him. Makes me wonder if he really does love dogs.... What do you think?

You mentioned at the beginning of your post that you know this is fictional.
So you know Martin Clunes is an actor. Sometimes nice actors play horrible characters.
Question Author
yes, yes, I know that. I'm talking bout being shocked that Clunes would agree to a storyline in which a harmless stray dog is simply put to sleep because it irritates him. sends out a very wrong message in my opinion
I think you are over analyzing things.
Do you honestly think he would do that Iloveher? he is a Doctor not a butcher.
Its fictional, just a story. Martin Clunes is well known as a real animal lover, he has loads of animals including horses.
I was also appalled Clines did this
sounds like another highly entertaining storyline i'm glad i missed ...
I don't watch the show, so don't know if Doc Martin is generally a bit curmudgeonly. I don't see how it sends out the wrong message. No one is going to think it's ok to put down an irritating dog just because Martin Clunes' character does. The part he plays in a show has no bearing on his own views or love of animals.
There are people in Real Life who would take this attitude - Martin Clunes the Actor played such a person - get over it.

Your attitude implies that anyone playing Macbeth or Hamlet, for example, supports murder.
i'm getting worried now, clunes played acid bath murderer john george haigh
Think the only comedian who actually is believable as a serious actor is Bradley the chase .Clune looks likes he try to be serious and yet suggesting I'm very funny which he isn't but for this part I'm trying not to be funny .Your woman out of the midwife is the same Bring back the testcard
So Martin Clunes as a professional actor is not allowed to play 'nasty' roles? In his private life he is president of the British Horse Society and supports many animal charities. What if he was offered a meaty role as a murderer or heaven forbid pedophile ? would he all of a sudden become evil? Honestly anything to do with blinking dogs or cats doesn't half get people whipped up -its make believe!!
I think you need to get clear the difference between fiction and reality......
I also think it is terrible that when Daniel Craig plays James Bond he goes round killing people.

And that Jonathan Rhys Meyers, when he played Henry VIII in The Tudors, he chopped his wife's head off, what a horrible man.
I agree with you, ILH, it was in very bad taste. Presumably it was meant to add to the 'humour' of his character (bad-tempered, grumpy old doc).

It didn't work for me - didn't think it was in the slightest bit funny. I think the same as you - it was a disgusting attempt at humour, and shame on him, even though it's not real.
Good acting from the dog, wonder if s/he objected to the script?!
I'm sure it would've done, had it been able to talk. :o)
It wasn't supposed to be humorous. It was used to show just how detached the Doctor is from 'normal' human feelings in light of his struggle with the couple's counselling and his relationship with his wife and son.
I'm under the impression it's supposed to be a comedy programme. Is that not correct?
Doc Martin's dislike of dogs has been a mainstay of the series since it began years ago.

IMDB even feel the need to mention it.
