I don't think Professor Wilson is naive, he has lived in the real world being an ex prison governor.
Apart from the financial side where are we going to find jobs inside a prison?
Large jails hold 600 to 800 prisoners where can they all work?
Unknown to most people there is an active 'outside' work program for long term prisoners in open jails that has operated successfully for many years.
These prisoners go to outside jobs daily, they can use a small % of their earnings on their prison 'canteen' account, but most goes to a saving account for after release. I assume the author of this piece is unaware of the scheme?
Prisoners are paid the full rate for the job, but as I said all but a small % has to go into a saving account.
