As a maths graduate (with a specialism in statistics) my answer would be an 'independent variable' but others might refer to it as an 'experimental variable' or a 'predictor variable'.
How's about a variable variable ..... j/k by the way :)
There appear to be at least two changeable variables. Dependant and independent.
It varies!
So it does.
Independent variable can be what you want it to be.

Dependent variable depends on the independent variable.

Constant variable,,,well,,,that's self explanatory
//The independent variable is the amount of light and the moth's reaction is the dependent variable.//
Quite a nice summing up.
A variable is something that changes, as opposed to a constant, which doesn't. in the equation y=x+1 say, x and y are variables, and if you specify values of x and calculate y then x is the independent variable and y is the dependent (it depends on x) variable. 1 is a constant.
That would be called a tricky variable.:-)
