My son, a bus driver, has just been given a 20 ticket for parking his bus at a stop for more than 5 minutes with the engine running. Unfortunately, there were 2 council officials hiding sneakily round the corner and they confronted him out of the blue.
My son thinks there is a possibility that they may not have completed the ticket to the letter, ie. the sections for issued or not issued have not been completed, plus they have put the address of the bus company and not his home address. Is there a web-site that gives advice on these matters?
Any help welcome.

Your son is a professional driver who should know better.

As an asthma sufferer I am very glad the officials are clamping down on this unnecessary pollution.

Tell him to pay the 20 - it costs me more than that every month in prescriptions.

im no expert, but if your son was at the wheel of the bus and the engine was running he wasnt "parked".

not sure how the law stands, but i do know that in the area i live, the vehicle has to be switched off and/or no one at the wheel....

lets do away with public transport all togeather ! then we can all use our own cars and have untold amounts of polutants in the air. lets cancel air flight, and trains. dont forget the ships with blooming great big funnels spewing smoke into the oceans.

Tell him if he sees the jobsworth tw@ts again, run them over at least twice.

If you drive a company vehicle they take the companies address I would not pay it because its not issued by the Police. Next time always switch off your engine with your light on do this many time over the course of the day across over the whole fleet wont be long that the company has too replace starter motors, also if you switch off as soon as you stop then the Turbo does not get time to get oiled while still being worked depeens on make of fleet. If you where leaving in the few mins then you have too keep the air tanks filled with air before driving off.

Never leave the motor running with the engine running. 12 years on Ex London Buses

Ethel. I suffer with asthma. It is not necessarily caused by diesel fumes. You will be telling us next that everyone who keeps chickens gives their neighbours bird flu. If you can't say something constructive, then don't bother. Reading these threads is not compulsory.
To the other, more intelligent replies, I would say that my son did not switch off the engine, as they sometimes will not restart. He is allowed by law to idle for 5 minutes (Ethel please note) but he was just getting back into the cab, and they had him for about 30 seconds over the limit.
As an asthma suffering transport manager (yes Ethel there are some of us), my advise would be to leave the ticket until it comes trhough to the company and see what they have booked him for. Was he with the bus? if so he could be keeping to his route times, tell them he was having a problem with the bus and was checking air pressurs or something. If it were one of my drivers I pay them and the company claims it as expenses.

All very true. Ive come out of the depot in the early hour and in the depot the buses have been left running for over 45 min before departure so the engine has warmed up.

On one occasion I left the bus garage on a cold engine 10 minutes into the journey to the starting point the engine seized on a busy two lane by the lights. Dont worry the Council Officers know they would pay up.

If you say that you was 30 secound over your allowed time say that you ticket machine does not do secounds and that it only does minutes so until it reaches the 4 minute it still reads 3 minutes. All the best I will saving this question so would like to know the outcome.

Good Luck

Dogsbody - after exhaustive medical tests while I have been hospitalised it has been proven that MY asthma is significantly aggravated by traffic pollution, including diesel fumes.

I am fully aware that this is not the only cause of asthma and many asthmatics aren't affected by traffic fumes.

A stationary vehicle emilts 80% more pollution than a moving vehicle.

It is an offence to leave engine idling unnecessarily - and if this bus driver has done so he should pay the fine.

According to the NHS in London transport emissions are responsible for 70% more deaths than traffic accidents.

And would you really want to push a baby in a buggy behing a bus with its engine running?
Or even alongside one on the pavement - I wouldn't.

20? he was lucky. Tell him to speak to his boss or the bus company about it. He may be able to contest the fine. But as an asthma sufferer myself I have to agree with Ethel.

May I nominate skids as being more worthy of d0gsb0dy's comment?

Ethel. What I am saying is that I didn't post this thread to be harangued by the likes of you. Vent your spleen elsewhere. After all, I wasn't driving the bus.
