I am at a loss today! I have not received my copy of the Spectator in my e-mail. Is there a problem? Thanks for looking into it, Daniel!

Hi Matakari

I don't know why that would be?

What is the start of your email address so I can sort it out?
I also thought that it was easy, but...
Assuming that I have linked correctly four of the unclued lights with their unclued 'twins' and established the 'of a kind' connection, I cannot resolve the two pairs. I assume that they are of equal length, but no meaningful permutations emerge. Further, for 39A I can find no fit around the letters I have in place. HINTS please.
Hi mathsman

I'm probably wrong but I connected 28a with 15a & 41a with 27a

As for 39a I think it is an anagram of AFTER NINE M
Thanks, Toalisi.
Got 39A now.
I tried the pairing you suggest, but I cannot get one of the pairs to be 'of a kind' with40A, 20D etc.
I was not very confident with my pairing suggestions & think it
is probably best if you ignore them. Sorry.

Back to the drawing board.
Daniel, here is the start of my e-mail address: kasuls@yahoo...
Thanks for looking into this!

Resent Matakari
Thank you very much, Daniel! I got it!
Toalisi,

My fault: I mistakenly thought that the pair formed two words not one. On to the stupid boy step for me.
mathsman

Thanks for your post - very classy of you.
Seeking some hints for the following, please! Are any of them anagrams?

ACROSS:

17 Tramps symbol(7): D?N????
24 Star sign regularly appearing fro triplet(4): T??N
35 Catching poor orphan, finally, in rags(7): M?????G

DOWN:

3 Calm old gent's first seen in avenue(6): A?????
5 Some unconditional rumour(5,hyphenated):?N???

Many thanks!
Yes 35a is an anagram but your M is wrong.

5d look for hidden words.
Got 5d! Thanks, toalisi! Still looking for the rest!
Matakari: further hints, in case you're still looking..................
The symbol you're looking for is like that for a telephone, but the word also means mad, or mpney, or s'on you don't nt to name.
Look at the alternate letters in the clue for the 4-letter word.
"To calm" (old verb): usually means to state, claim, maintain; Fr. wd. for big avenue enclosing abb. for gentleman
The last one is hidden in a wordin the clue; should really be 2-3; of French origin again (def. rumour)
Have you got Bradford's Crossword Solver's Dictionary? They're all in the red volume (invaluable!)
I thank you, maurice, for these exhaustive explanations! I have the answers now. I did not know that 3 down carried that meaning! Will certainly have to get Bradford! Thanks again!
