Hi all, can anyone advise me on how easy it is to set up as self employed. I want to work for myself as a decorator but have always been employed. I would like to know how you start off, what you can claim for as far as tax allowances are concerned( can I claim for the home phone and mobile, use of computer etc) Also would it be wise to have an accountant to help with the books. Many thanks in advance, cheers

Theres lots to think about but as long as you think you can get work its worth the effort of thinking it through. I set up as SE 2 years ago and found the information on the Inland Revenue site really easy to understand. The issues in your question are all covered here:

If you have a Business Link office where you live they are extremely helpful in giving advice to people wanting to start up their own business. You can have a one to one chat with someone who will take you through all aspects of being self employed. They also have a website at businesslink.gov.uk
