I have recently bought some old type 100 watt light bulbs and note that on the box it states "Not suitable for household room illumination".

Can anyone advise me what the reason for this warning is, as the bulbs seem to work perfectly well!

Not an EU directive is it :-)
Hmm, that's a little puzzling. Must say I would be a little reluctant to use them just in case they got too hot whilst in continuous use and affected the light fitting. Conventional 100w filament bulbs produce quite a lot of heat at the best of times.
So they're perfectly safe but not environmentally friendly. I get 100 watt bulbs whenever I can find them. I don't care what you all say, there is no energy saving equivalent that comes close to their light quality.
Looking at that link Chris, it seems to simply put forward the flawed excuse for imposing a ban and take the opportunity to be insulting to those who have noted the issues and protested. Unsure I'd give much credence to such an individual, especially since the worst they come up with is a claim that the lamps are inefficient and may give lower light.
Modern energy-saving bulbs are much better than they were, when they first came out. For instance, they don't take any time at all to "warm up" I stopped using old-fashioned bulbs a long time ago, and have never looked back.
I find the light is very gloomy with those type of bulbs. I use them on my stairs, but switch them off as soon as I can as the light is terrible. Perhaps the warning is to avoid making people depressed by sitting in that light.
