Pub Quizes

Are pub quizzes no longer fair? I hadn't been to one for ages, but went last night and was very disappointed, too many people using iphones under the tables, so what's the point of them now.

My sister text me asking "How many fences on the Grand National course" to which I replied 16
5 minutes later she said I was wrong and it was 30
I asked what the exact question was and she said "how many fences on the Grand National course"
16 is the correct answer although they do 2 circuits and jump 30 of them
I'm always right ;o)

I have been compiling and presenting quizzes around my area for about 20 years and the surge of the mobile phone is a pain in the 'arris!! I always ask for phones to be off of tables and out of site prior to starting, there is also a printed warning on the answer sheet. Within the last couple of months I had to warn one team that I knew that they were cheating, having observed them and also told by other teams that underhand tactics were being used, I was very diplomatic about it and only warned them, but the amount of abuse that they threw at me was unbelievable, the women were effing and blinding and accusing every other team of doing the same, they haven't been back since! It is quite difficult to keep and eye on every team, sometimes I get up to 20 teams, around 100 people, scattered about the pub, I do my best and I think i'm 'cheat free' lol. Also, the quizmaster IS always right, even if he's wrong, there can be only one answer, the answer that I have! Mistakes are made, we are human, but I make sure I double check all of my answers, it seems to work in the couple of weekly quizzes I present, I just love doing it. :)
Sadly, if anything at all is done without financial reward - a power struggle will emerge.
This applies to voluntary organisations, social groups, and of course, pub quizzes.
For some, the notion that it is 'just a game' or 'for fun' do lot apply and they take it far more seriously than it could ever deserve - including cheating to win.
On our last cruise, the next table were serious quiz bores, and after a disputed question one night, one of them came over to confirm he had googled the answer to confirm he was right. This was two days later, and I had forgotten about it ten minutes after the quiz finished, so I had to ask him what he was talking about. He seemed most offended that I wasn't waiting with baited breath for his research results!
I don't take quizzes like that seriously but on the two nights we stuffed them I was sadly rather pleased!!!
