I was wondering if people from Wales and Scotland feel very proud and patriotic about where they are from or does it not bother you that the rest of the world sees you as English.

absolutely 100% proud! deeply protective and get really wound up when people are critical of wales or the welsh. this hugely amuses my many english friends who take great pleasure in winding me up. even though i know they're doing it on purpose i bite every time!

the only thing that i dislike about wales is the fake, modern welsh accent! proper welsh accents sound great, mostly heard in the traditionally welsh speaking areas but many inner city areas of cardiff, newport, swansea etc just speak chav welsh! its dreadful.

I am very prouad of being welsh - it does get irratating when everyone thinks your english!!

Welsh and Proud!!!!

im english and i view scottish and welsh people and scottish and welsh, not english. I though that people in wales + scotland were viewed as british, not english?

pinksmartie, i've found that when abroad and people ask where im from as soon as i say Wales the majority will say 'oh yeah Wales in England'. Trying to get them to then understand that we are in fact a whole other country usually ends in mass confusion! A lot also say 'Wales? Is that in London?'

Nooooooooo!

oh no you've started something now!

Listen my Dad viewed everyone from the UK including the Irish as English he didn't even know what the word United Kingdom meant.
you bet your ass it bothers me being thought of as english.
I'm Scottish, and proud to be so! Well, not "proud" since it wasn't of my own doing, but yes, very patriotic. I love the country, and so does my English boyfriend!

I've only once been asked if Glasgow was in England, by an incrediby stupid English girl.

Most people are quite well aware that Scotland is separate, and most people are a lot more excited to find out that you're Scottish, Welsh, or Irish than boring old English! ;-P

The fact we haven't been conquered for a 1000 years, rather we've done the conquering, means we English have never felt the need to promote our own identity in the face of a foreign invader.

The Scots ,Welsh and Irish have all had a rough deal in the past,so always feel the need to promote their own identity, and fair enough.

Anybody living in the big cities of England at the moment will know how they feel, and pretty soon us English will need a bit of flag waving, and promotion of our identity.

i am very proud to be scottish-the only place in the world i know of that says we are all english is america....but hey that speaks volumes doesnt it??!!
Across the world, the terms England and Great Britain (or UK) are used synonymously, which is very frustrating if you come from Scotland, Wales, or NI. Has anyone else ever noticed that people abroad can be a bit offhand with you when they think you're English? I always find that correcting them and telling them I'm Scottish changes their attitude slightly! People definitely jump to conclusions about you from your nationality, and that, unfortunately, is why it does bother me when people assume I am English. I am proud to be Scottish, but not British.
ditto paddy. we are all tarred with the same brush....and worse when it comes to football hooligans, ahem sorry fans!!
A lot of English folk use "England" to mean Great Britain or the UK, how many times have you heard them refer to The Queen as the Queen of England? On the tv or radio, what about all the times they say "so and so of/in England...Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland" to cover the fact they made a mistake?

We are all patriotic. But at any sport when England are knocked out, the English root for the Scots, Welsh or Irish. When their team is knocked out, the other three root for the team playing against England.

And foreigners think that ALL britons live in London.

carrieanne, thats is rubbish!!! the english do not root for the scots, even the newsreaders and sports presenters prove that!!! if a scot wins something then they are british but if they lose something then they are scottish....if an english person wins something they are english and if they lose its never mentioned!!! the rugby proved that too. its pathetic it has to be like that cos as far as i am concerned we are all on the same island-we should compete in things as british.....
When I was a tiny tot and we moved down to the Home Counties, I remember crying when devolution was first mooted as idea ... I thought we would never see our famiies again -a bit like displaced persons from WW2. Oh those were the days. I always root for Bonnie Scotland in any event. ( Can some kind- body send a fresh sing'l fish supper by e-mail please!)

Why be proud of being a Scot!
