Does anyone know whether xmas trees are ok for Kak's to chew on?

I am sure that a bird expert will be along soon, but I found this page which seems to infer that it is okay.

The first year that I had my kitties one (the boy!) ate loads of red tinsel. I would have thought that it was tasteless. Strange animals are cats!
It depends on which species of tree you have/use. In NZ there are heaps of Pines Radiata tree plantations and the Kakarikis seem to live with them. In an captive situation the birds will probably nibble more than they would in the wild so I would not use a Xmas tree unless it was proven non-toxic. Most fir-type trees are mildly toxic. I would stick to known safe tree branches.
