Windows XP shut doiwn

Over the last week, I click "start"...."turn off computer" ... "Turn Off" but it stays running. I get the usual "saving your settings", then "Windowns is shutting down" screens, but it stays with that final screen and runs and runs. I have to turn it off at the mains switch. Any advice how to get it to turn off like it should?

Start up in safe mode, by pressing the F8 key when the computer is starting up and selecting safe mode.

run msconfig, (start, run, msconfig)

select startup and disable all items.

Restart normally, then try shutting down again.

If it does, then its trial and error to find the rogue program.

Also check for viruses/spyware.

Thanks for that clear guide, I will try it. My AV and Spyware is very good and I keep my computer as clean as possible. Thanks again

I disabled all items and it still wouldnt shut down like it should.I have to restart manually or turn it off at the wall. Any more suggestions?

Try using system restore to a date prior to when the problem first started.

Start, all programs, accessories, system tools, system restore.

I appreciate your input Mattie, thank you :o) I tried the system restore first and it didnt help. I Googled for a fix yesterday ( http://aumha.org/win5/a/shtdwnxp.htm ) and its DAUNTING! Hahaa, at least with XP I can restart with the reset button or shut down by turning off at the wall switch.
