Ford Fiesta Squealing Noise When Gentle Braking

When I'm braking gently / semi firmly, for example when approaching changing traffic lights, there is a high pitched squealing sound which lasts as long as I touch the brake pedal. It tends not to happen when I brake sharply, and sounds as if it is coming from the rear. Any suggestions as to what this may be? The car is a 1997 Fiesta Flight R Reg.

You probably have a build up of brake shoe dust inside your rear brake drums but it could also be worn brake shoes, you will have to remove the drums and have a look, if the shoes are ok with plenty of lining just clean the dust out.

do not use anything that would contamnate the shoes or your brakes might not work!

It might be worth checking that your disc pads aren't down to the rivets !
Disc pads don't have rivets the disc linings are bonded.

Woops, sorry Tourman, I meant down to the metal !

Silly me !
