My fingernails are really long and the underside of some of them, especially thumbnails, are really stained. I think this comes from cleaning and preparing vegetables as I always wear gloves when gardening. A nailbrush does not seem to shift it possibly because of the curve.. Could anyone suggest anything that might work - I have even tried neat bleach!

I dip mine in neat fairy liquid (or equiv) and leave them to soak like that while I watch tv. It takes a while and sometimes I also have to use a white nail pencil on the undersides. Don't use neat bleach !

Thanks Janbee. I have just used superglue to mend a nail where it has begun to break.
I'd cut them off and start again. Stained nails are not a good look.
Also make sure you scrub with a nail brush after you've peeled the likes of potatoes and carrots.
Lemons are good. Halve a lemon, squeeze out juice by hand then put nails in remaining flesh and juice still in skin and knead.
Yes, that's true Lemon juice is vey good. I forgot about that.
I always put clear nail varnish on the top and also paint it on the underside of the tip to stop it staining - works for me.
Stained fingernails are a common problem for every woman who is working in the kitchen. But wearing a transparent nail paint all the time is not a healthy option as well. I usually get rid of stained nails by dipping them in bleach water mixed with lemon juice and then rubbing them with a nail buffer. Rubbing nails with a bath salt and dipping them in hot water also helps! Try cleaning them immediately after you're done with kitchen, so that stains do not become lasting.
Not a permanent solution, but "Tesco MakeUp - Goodbye Yellow" nail polish/varnish is wonderful stuff :-)
