heavy drinker advice...

i currently drink a bottle of gin every night... i usually start about 5 and finish about midnight... i doubt if anyone could spot the difference before 9... i put this down as a psychological dependency, rather than a physical one... because i had to go into hospital for 4 days recently, and didn't have a problem not drinking...


anyone got any ideas, advice ?

Spirits are the worst for addiction coz they are less volume.

My mate was sacked about 2 years ago from his job for going to the pub on a lunchtime and drinking whiskey evry day and comin back peesed. He admits he got addicted coz it made him feel better.

A) Get off the spirits...beer is less volume alcohol and fills you up more and quicker.

B) Find something to do after work like pumpin iron in the gym.

Boredom and lack of direction are a major problem.

thank you for that, but i moved to gin cos of the calorie count,,, used to be a lager person, but was putting on a lot of weight... so switched to killer spirits... and have managed to keep my weight stabilised since...
Hi, I spend most evening when the kids are in bed, supping away at the wine. I think its partly due to "me time" but also out of habit and boredom. And its a habit I must get out of. Do you think that your drinking is out of boredom too?
Please don't anyone take offence to this but my hubby drinks a lot,he always says 'i haven't got a problem' but i really think if you drink heavily or steadily,then you have got a problem and when it interferes with relationships its time to do something but thats just from my side!

You probably didn't need a drink whilst in hospital 'cos you were away from the "triggers" you experience at home i.e.boredom,television, habits etc. I work with alcoholics in prison, alcohol doesn't bother a lot of them while they are inside as the pressures of everyday life have been removed.


A bottle of gin a day is excessive, why not ask your GP for a liver function test. Perhaps seeing the damage it is causing may persuade you to take action.

If you think it as a psychological dependency only then you are fooling yourselves.If you can go dry for 4 days why did you not try for a longer period of time.Contrary to popular beleif ,It requires more than a strong will to quit completely.You need some professional help.Thinking about quitting is the first step .

the good thing is you have taken the first important step,by admitting what you drink, my dad used to drink a lot and believe me you are standing at the top of a very slipperey slope get help now as zorro says get a hobby,do something,anything to occupy yourself,but please step back from the brink if you go over it is very,very hard to recover,

Perhaps it would help you to try and understand why you need to drink a botle of gin every night. That's an awful lot and it must be really damaging your liver and yourlong-term health. Do you drink through boredom, depression, stress and do you really feel better for it afterwards? Does it make the boredom, depression or stress permanently disappear? Why not allow yourself just one drink per night and start to do other things to occupy your time like walking, reading, doing a jigsaw puzzle, trying a new evening class, etc. If you are able to develop a more positive frame of mind, the need for so much alcohol should slowly disappear. Put the money you save on booze into a 60 day savings account where you can't easily be tempted to get at it and by the end of a year you will have surprised yourself how much healthier and wealthier you are. Remember, you only have one life and keep reminding yourself what happened to George Best when you're pouring that second gin !!
