I recently bought 25 in Sainsbury gift vouchers and sent them to a friend in a birthday card. On receipt of the card it was found that the envelope had been slit, and the vouchers stolen. The Post Office say normal first class mail should not be used for sending valuables and that I cannot claim. I still have my Visa receipt, can I claim the value back from Visa?

doubt it, but the people to ask would be your credit card company
No, think about it, if you bought an item of clothing on visa and lost it, you couldn't really expect them to pay for it, would you? Valuables should really be sent recorded delivery (where you can claim up to 30 for lost goods), or by registered post
How would a postal worker know in the first place that the envelope that you were sending contained Vouchers? Did you seal the envelope proper?.
I haven't cehcked teh insurance agreement Visa lately however I seem to remember it is 50 (?) so you wouldn't get anything back anyway.
birthday cards will probably be easily identified by posties, very few posties are thieves but you do get them so thats why the post office tell you not to send valubles or money through the post especially in bright red envelopes. I remember a few years ago two asian postal workers opened a bank account in the name inlandi revenuei and swindled tens of thousands of pounds of tax money, they only got cought when one of them came to work in a ferrari
