Seen as both wads & sans. Wa(r)ds for treating the eyes. Sans- without and also short for sanatarium. Take your pick.

More likely WADS, I think. (SANS doesn't explain the pupils i think)

Someone posted a short while ago to say that they'd put Sans in the online version and it had been accepted.

FF - Sans does work with pupils if you think of the Sans(sanitoriums/sanitoria) in books about boarding schools, posh schools etc. Pupils often spent time in the san.
Thanks. Until I read the other threads I wasn't aware of the word SAN being used to mean sick bays in boarding schools- and I read every Jennings book too when I was 11-12 years old
