But how does he know ? 2% is a very exact number. If he had said "lots" or maybe "some" I might believe him. Too many might be a better way of saying it.

Sp, about the panda? No, i just realised it was on the wrong thread. However, i have now seen it in jokes and still don't understand. Sorry,:-(

yes, you're right, actually, about females being included. The figure i found was 0.4%- of all paedophiles- not of all women. Unfortunately, we haven't caught all paedophiles, so I'm wary about the percentages.
"I can see no reason why the Catholic church should have a different percentage and I would say that the same percentage of people are paedophiles in every profession, trade and class of people."

Its because they are prevented from having a normal sex life with adults, so children are easy pray for these sick barstewards!
They are claiming it to be less than half of the general population. With sp's logic- it should really be double and more if you are right, too, ratter.
Hang on ... we're not sure what the pope actually said. I have my doubts that he said that.
Ratter, an adult who is attracted to grown men or women won't develop a sexual interest in children just because they are celibate through choice or otherwise.

It's not like being in a sweetie shop and choosing toffee because they've run out of chocolate.
The moderation on this site can be truly baffling at times.

I agree Roy...I am not sure why my post was removed either !

One way for the Catholic church to reduce its incidence of paedophile priests is to allow them to mayy and live normal lives.

Far too many priests lead an unatural 'celibate' life while simultaniously being accorded a level of usnpoken adoration that eventually leads them to believe that they can behave exactly as they please.

The willingness for the Catholic hierarcy to condone such abuse by simply moving paedophile priests around only reinforces this air of invincibility that priests live with.

If the church seriously wishes to eradicate abuse by its priests, it should ensure that abuse in all areas is addressed - including the air of God-given right to behave as they please.

I entirely agree - but I believev that the lifestyle of priests - as described in my post - has a lot to do with the facilitation and acceptance of abuse.

Its not just catholic priests that are celibate

I cannot agree with your assertion that the absence of a mature adult sexual repaltionship leads to paedophilia.

Child abuse is not about sex, it is about power, and it is deviant behaviour which can easily exist alongside a mature sexual relationship within marriage.

I agree that it is not just priests who are celibate, but celibacy is a mere part of their unatural lifefstyle - and part of that unatural lifestyle is the adoration they are accorded, which allows them to bevae with impunity.
I disagree, Andy. Rape is about power. Paedophiles are sexually attracted to children.
ummm - Rape is indeed about power - paedophilia is about control, what we are really arguing is the semantics of deviant behaviour.
// Rape is indeed about power - paedophilia is about control //

They're both also about sex.

// One way for the Catholic church to reduce its incidence of paedophile priests is to allow them to marry and live normal lives. //

I agree. I also think that some people become priests in the first place is because they're not attracted to adults of the opposite sex anyway. Same goes for monks and nuns.
Andy - I think you mis-understand me
I believe that whether a person is celibate or not has nothing at all to do with a propensity to paedophlia
Trust me I should know
Ric/roar - thank you for the further explanation, I did indeed misunderstand your original observation.

I am sorry for any distress that this thread may cause.
Andy - its not causing me any distress at all - neither does being celibate :-))
Ah, I understand now - your 'I Should know ...' is in reference to your celibacy.

If celibacy is a choice, then that is fine, but when it is a condition of employment, as it is for some priests, then that is a separate issue entirely.

Celibacy is only one of the unatural demands placed on single priests, but the irony is, it is not a condition for married converts, only for single men - one way of the Catholic church bowing to practicality when it suits - the dire shortage of candidates means that married converts are accepted as priests, and celibacy, mysteriously, is not required.

Such is religion - evveryone must obey the rules, unless the church breaks them for you.
