A work colleague is leaving to go to Australia for a year.
We want to get her a leaving present, but not sure what to get her.

Does anyone have any ideas?

I think this is a genuine question. They are not a new joiner to the site as they have a large number of previous question and answers.

You can click on their name to see if they are a new joiner.

A click on a name can easily identify a person who has just joined and only asked one "leading" question.

Sorry, I'm a bit confused. Have I done something wrong?!
I am well aware of that, VHG. My tongue is firmly in my cheek this morning.

I'd get her a voucher so she can buy what she wants.
The book "The Places You'll Go". Or is that too twee?
No, you've done nothing wrong, TCoys. We get a lot of unsolicited advertising early in the mornings.

It's an interesting question to me actually. I'm off to Greece for 2 weeks in late September and my mother's birthday falls half way through the holiday so I've got to take her presents in my luggage, hence I've booked an extra 20kgs.
How about a compass? She will be in a new place, with hopefully lots of travelling and it will come in pretty useful.
A guide book where she's going ?
How about a skype subscription, so she can easily keep in touch with family and friends even if they aren't online?
passport?
Buy her the book by Bill Bryson called Down Under.

This is a great light hearted history of Australia (he went all over the country) but with Bill Bryson's wonderful writing style she will be laughing all the way through it.

She can read it on the plane and throw it away at the end of the flight if she does not want to carry it around with her.

I remember the opening of the book where he is flying in to Australia and says he is trying to remember the name of the Australian prime minister (after all he says somebody has to remember these things). Then he says as soon as he find out he forgets almost straight away.

He then goes on to tell the story of how they "lost" a Prime Minster. He went swimming in the sea one morning and disappeared and was never seen again.

I had to look it up on the internet and he was right.

Anyone would love reading this book as it is fascinating and funny at the same time.
