Hi,

I am tracing my family history, and have found that one of my great-grandfathers is listed on the census for 1891 aboard the HMS Seagull, but the only information i can find about a Royal Naval vessel called Seagull was a Plover class wooden gun vessel, from 1867-71 and this was sold in 1887. So i presume it cannot be this one, was there another one with the same name after that? I am trying to find a picture and some information, he also served on HMS Royal Oak and HMS Minotaur and i have found pictures of them. So any information of a web-site especially with pictures would be much appreciated, of the Seagull.

Also forum on the site so may help with any other info: http://www.battleships-cruisers.co.uk/royal.htm

WW2 HMS Seagull here: http://www.battleships-cruisers.co.uk/halcyon_class.htm#HMS%20Seagull

There is also a list of monuments in Portsmouth in 'Janes Fighting Ships of WW1' that lists the Seagull lost as above in 1918

A Seagull is also mentioned here re Somalian interpreters working onboard though this may be the one sold in the 1880s http://www.portcities.org.uk/london/server/show/ConNarrative.109/chapterId/2319/The-Somali-Community-in-the-Port-of-London.html

Also this guys site is huge - tons of links and details inc pics of WW1 ships - might have some luck trolling through this http://www.pbenyon.plus.com/Naval.html

Good luck..

There was an HMS Seagull which entered into service on 31 May 1889. She was converted to a minesweeper in 1908 and lost in 1918 in the collision mentioned by nickmo above. Here is a photograph of HMS Seagull which is labelled "pre 1896".

Tatty - you are amazing!

I always know there will be a fabby picture that no-one else can find in your posts.

I'll have to test you myself sometime....:-)
