Is this what the right-on brigade were expecting when pressure was put on the drug companies to stop lethal injection use of pentobarbital ?

And authorities in Utah and Wyoming later said they were considering bringing back execution by firing squad to avoid the problems associated with lethal injections.

I think the blank bullet thing came from the days in the military when men where ordered to be part of the firing squad not volunteers.I don't know how they'd select a squad these days to execute civilian prisoners unless they asked people to apply for the job and selected the squad from any applicants.
Apparently, Americans do like the retribution aspect of it:

If it is to be carried out, the Taiwan method would doubtless be the most effective.

Execution by shooting is the most common method of execution in the world, used in over 70 countries. Whilst most of these countries use the firing squad, single person shooting is still found. In Soviet Russia, a single bullet to the back of the head was the most frequently used method of execution for military and non-military alike. This is still the main method of execution in Communist China though the gunshot can be to either the neck or head. In the past, the Chinese government would ask the family of the executed person to pay the price of the bullet. In Taiwan, the prisoner is first injected with a strong anesthetic to render him senseless and then a bullet is fired in to his heart.

I'm sure it would be easy to rig a pistol/rifle so that it's fired remotely. One could have 3 executioners with 3 buttons, with only one rigged to the apparatus.
Simples.

Wonder what the victims of these murders would like to do to them?, probably hang draw and quarter them.
On the subject of executions did anybody see the Steve McQueen film Tom Horn based on the true story of an American hero turned paid killer?
He was executed by hanging on a gallows that was sort of self service. He was placed on the trap and his weight activated a device that drained water out of a counter balance and sprang the trap.
.....bringing back execution by firing squad to avoid the problems associated with lethal injections.

erm that would be non lethal injections....

The difficulty YMF is that there is no doubt we have executed erm the wrong people ( Timothy Evans springs to mind ) - and most of the Irish terrorists would have been hanged. We now know - we dont 'think' - we know that around 80% had nothing to do with terrorism....

other than that fire away !

The difficulty with non lethal injection is that it is now commonplace to sue in Europe about banning the drugs used. - The problem of banning propofol ( actually a very safe anaesthetic, and yes I am aware of the irony in that statement ) is that it is now used in around 80% of general anaesthetics.
I don't think a blank round produces the same recoil as a live one. If you were in a firing squad you'd know. Maybe they did miss deliberately. That's why the officer in charge of the detail had the job of administering the coup de gráce with his pistol.
Some may remember Victor Sylvester, the band leader. He took part in 5 executions during his military service in WW1
Sorry- just back to this thread. (andy- you spelt it squd, which was what Roy was referring to, i believe). Thanks for your explanations. Those traditions aren't really relevant now, though. I understand now why a firing squad was used, but we could change that now.
Thanks pix! x.
// what is it with the septics?//
