We need to go to Forres near Elgin next September, and would love to go by train, but I don't have the first idea of cost or indeed how we'd have to stage it. I tried to google it but it keeps coming up with Elgin to Holyhead. I believe we would have to get a train to Glasgow then to Aberdeen, but don't really know. I'd really appreciate ANY help. Thank you.

it is 2SP, the drawback being having to lug heavy bags across Glasgow from Central to Queen Street. an even easier way would be sleeper from crewe to inverness - but the fare is £302, plus whatever the sleeper berth costs.
Or you could go to Edinburgh instead of Glasgow?

Beware of having to change trains at Perth, as they are often on different platforms and you have to cross a bridge. And Perth is the coldest train station in the world.
