cheapest flight for those dates seems to be with KLM-North-West via Amsterdam, the direct flight to ewr is fully booked. Call KLM direct on 08705-074074, or use any of the flight brokers listed in the sunday papers, they usually have a telephone option - I use Majortravel of London, 020 7393 1070.
Any particular reason she doesn't want to use the internet? I went to New York last December and left it rather late to book. The travel agents were no use whatsoever so I ended up trawling the internet and eventually found a flight direct from Manchester to Newark on the right dates. Newark is in New Jersey just across the river from New York and didn't cost any more to get to Manhatten than flying into JFK, in fact was better as we got the bus into the Port Authority, about 3 blocks from our hotel. We had an e-ticket which I printed off the computer and everything was fine. We flew Continental by the way.
