Hi Joychow. I think there's something wrong with the sentence. I think it would make sense if it read:

The role of the ear is to code accoustic disturbances

so a) to code

does that make sense?

I spelt acoustic wrong-sorry!

Hi teag1rl~~~now i can make sure that it's the print mistake~~~thanks~~~the given answer is also A"to code"~~~my original answer is "coded", but obviously the past tense doesn't seem reasonable~~~

and it doesn't matter with the wrong spelling~~~^ ^

Answer A needs a verb, as you say. It should read "is to code."

I think the IT in answer D is probably supposed to be IS.

If so, "the role of the ear is coding..." That would be just as good as "the role of the ear is to code..."

What difficult subject matter for a grammar exercise!
