It gives free calls to other registered skype users, irrespective of where they are.you connect via the internet computer to computer, not to their phone. I use it, but for me it only has value if I am actually at my computer and I know that the person I want to talk to is at theirs. I also know of quite a few people who use it.... mostly the quality is pretty good, but occasionally you will get a garbled message. If the number of registered users is anything to go by, Skype has already taken off.

I think it is more likely that VoIP telephony will supercede the existing technology over time... I also make use of a VoIP telephone system and have a VoIP handset at home.
I use Skype all the time, local and international. If you phone people who have broadband then you could be talking for free.

We use it domestically to talk to relatives, here and abroad. My husband who works from home, also uses it to call his business partners.

The trick to saving money is to persuade all the friends & contacts you call regularly to download it to their computers free of charge, and either arrange to call via Skype at a certain time or phone & say " I'll "Skype you back in 5 minutes". People seem so wedded to their mobiles these days that when they're in the house it doesn't occur them to switch their computers on. However, there are big savings to be made if you and your contacts can get to change your habits. We've generally found the sound quality pretty good, even when talking from the UK to Canada, the US and Bahrain.

Reading these posts, you'd never guess that Skype will allow you to save a fortune even when calling people who don't have Skype (or even an internet connection). Using Skype Out lets you call other people via their normal phones. You can prepay in increments of (I think) 5 in the UK (Here in Europe, it's 10 Euros). With that you can call anyone, just about anywhere in the world for pennies. For example, a call to Australia will cost you 0.017 per minute.

its not SKYPE but i made 3 international calls last night for over 1 and half hours (FREE). it costs 10 euros for 120 days and permits you to call landlines in loads of countries FREE. the 10 euros also lets you call 089 084 and mobiles at a low chargable rate. buy a headset and you get no echo. superb service.
