can u uninstall win95 then install win xp onto a laptop?( ibm notepad pentium processor)

I'm no geek, but if your operating system on the laptop was win 95, then maybe your laptop won't be compatible with XP because it is too old.

You CAN, but whether you should is another matter.


If the laptop is one that came with Windows 95 pre-installed it is VERY unlikely to be powerful enough to run Windows XP.


XP is not just a newer version of 95, it is a totally different sort of operating system and needs a much more powerful PC.


For example you would need about 256Mb of real memory to use XP, and if the laptop is fairly old I doubt if it will have that much memory.

I agree: It's extremely unlikely that you would get decent performance, plus you might not be able to get XP compaitble drivers for many of the components.

thanks for answering so quickly, the thing is I got my dad one to play about with (he's never had a comp) but all he really wanted one for was to brouse the net, I doubt he will be down loading or playing games, its really just to get used to it b4 he invest in good one, can u suggest anything?
Not sure exactly what you're asking, but if he just wants to surf, then the machine should be fine as is, with Win95.
