I have been told to feed Mic a high protein full fat diet. He has pressure sores hence the high protein, full fat because of his weight loss, he has lost tons of weight. He is taking simvastatin 40mg tablets one at night. Yet the leaflet says this medication is for patients on a low fat diet. Going back to the protein can you have too much. Googleing is as clear as mud as opinions vary.

I can't help you with informed detail, jeza, but the statin is normally given to help to lower cholesterol (so it follows that the low fat diet would be usual for people trying to reduce cholesterol). Perhaps it's been prescribed for mic to help to counteract any problems potentially arising from his full fat diet, in his current condition. As long as it's been prescribed by a doctor who knows his full state of health, I wouldn't read the leaflet - it's part of his overall medication.

I would agree with Boxy re the Statin, though a quick call to GP to check wouldn't hurt.

A protein rich diet as opposed to a high protein diet in my view is good but also needs calories and any dietician or Nurse should be able to advise you on the best things that his digestion can cope with.


A difficult balance for you - trial and error and you are doing a great job. x

I've read many sites on protein boxy, some say too much is bad for you, others say you can't eat too much. I too await Sqads reply.

Mamya. I now read every label on everything I buy, looking for protein content. The dietician told me to mash potatoes with milk, make them sloppy and then add powdered milk to make them like normal mash. Reading the label powdered milk is very high in protein. She has given lots of advice. Sardines are a good source. It really is a labour of love as Mic loves them and I can't stand the smell, feeding them to him is not good for my stomach.

My comments only relate to this particular case as i have been following it with interest and is not meant to be a treatise on Diet in Human Disease.

I assume that Mic has no difficulties in swallowing and that his "pressure sores" are not the size if dinner plates oozing with fluid all over his dressings and sheets of his bed.

Fat diet:
There seems little point in having a high fat diet AND taking Simvastin and i think that it is a matter of the left hand not knowing what the right hand is doing...the medical staff not knowing she will be on a high fat diet and the Dietician not realising that he is on Simvastin.
This is no big deal and i would continue as such, with Fried eggs and bacon, Fish and chips, cheese and milk whenever he wants them.

Protein....I am presuming that he is not taking Complan or such but just needs a high protein diet. No, it is very difficult, particularly in Mic's case to take too much protein and providing that he has carbohydrates at his beck and call, then over dosing with protein will not be an issue.

I would have thought that he will have District Nurse back up and the advice of a Dietician.

Thanks for all the answers.

Sqad, he did have trouble swallowing but now that problem has gone.
The pressure sores are healing well since he got home. I change the dressings every day despite the district nurse telling me how much they cost. (I couldn't care less what they cost). I don't have a lot of faith in her seems a bit of an airhead to me.
As for diet, Mic is not a fish and chip guy, more a meat and loads of veg. He's eating loads of chicken and sardines, not together I must add. Plus eggs, milk and cheese. Porridge for breakfast and a 3 course lunch and dinner.
I will speak to the dietician about the statins next time she calls.
I hope I've not missed anything out, and no he is not having complan.

Ive never heard of too much protein in my place. After major surgery they are always encouraging high protein.... Chicken soup usually a winner lol (peoples appetite starts off poor usually) ..

Ive seen folk prescribed procal shots 3-4x a day ONTOP of ensure drinks 2-3x a day ... Seems alot, but im sure and hope that they will monitor MMs weight - his intake sounds fab to me!!

Re pressure sores.... I understand you wanting to change them daily, but its not always good to disturb the wound as much because pulling the dressings off can damage the good skin. Hope they have a good barrier film for you to use aswell.

Can I suggest you ask for Fortisip compact drinks on prescription from your doctor or the hospital dietician? They come in two types, regular and protein. Each bottle is only 125ml but they contain all the nutrients needed and each bottle contains 300 calories. I am underweight through health issues and they are a godsend to me as I never have any appetite.
I also have a build up soup (again, on prescription) which contains 200 calories for a small portion.
