Maybe I Am A Grumpy Old Woman

On the whole I am quite a private person and prefer to choose how much information I give out about myself and certainly prefer to give my opinion rather than have it proffered on my behalf.

A friend frequently speaks for me and it drives me potty, similarly I am not comfortable when forum users send 'love and hugs from all of us'. I can speak for myself thank you very much.

I find it deeply creepy when I read postings wishing a Happy Valentines Day to all the ladies. I can get my head around Merry Christmas but Valentines Day is a more intimate occasion and I really don't want a strangers good wishes.

And when I mention on a forum that I'm home alone on the sofa, I really do not want a random person offering to keep me warm......even if he has offered to bring some wine.

Maybe I don't understand the interactions between users on an internet forum but I'd be surprised if I was the only one that feels this way?

So am I a GOW or am I confused about forum etiquette?

Well, if nothing else I've brightened Sqad's afternoon......
I think you have to take a lot with a pinch of salt. Banter, flirting, hugs and kisses...it's harmless. It would be very different face-to-face, but there's a natural distance here. Also, things can look very different in print than they would sound if you were speaking. There's no facial expression, body language or tone of voice to help. I often avoid posting something as i can be quite cheeky in real life and it might just come across as rude, if i typed it.
